When people are young, their skin contracts rapidly and a perfect body line can be maintained even if a lot of weight is gained or lost. But as they age, their skin loses some elasticity, and wrinkles appear if lots of weight is suddenly lost. Therefore, those who are 40 years and older need to closely consult with a specialist before deciding which surgery would be optimal (liposuction or abdominoplasty) for abdominal obesity correction. Abdominoplasty is a surgery removing stretched skin, drawing abdominal muscles, and correcting the shape of the buried navel.
Age and each individual's skin elasticity should be considered before deciding how to treat abdominal obesity. Those who are old or have less elastic skin of the abdominal region are advised to undergo an abdominoplasty, rather than a liposuction. There are two abdominoplasty options (full and mini), and its suitability depends on the extent of skin laxity.
It is necessary to first go through an expert diagnosis before deciding on the method of abdominoplasty. The volume of the excess and droopy skin is the most important consideration. If the skin severely droops in a large volume, a full abdominoplasty is performed. If a person has a long vertical scar caused by a caesarean section in the past, a full abdominoplasty will also be recommended. In a full abdominoplasty, even the shape of the navel can be corrected under general anaesthesia. The large volume of skin is incised and the entire abdominal muscles are tightened through this surgery.
The effect of this surgery tends to be dramatic and lasts for a long time. However, the surgery has disadvantages of a relatively long surgery duration (about 3-4 hours) and 3-6 weeks of typical recovery time.
If the skin drooping is not severe or if the skin is relatively elastic, mini abdominoplasty would be suitable. This surgery can be applied to those receiving liposuction as well. This surgery is also recommended for those who wish to resume their normal activities within a shorter time frame.
Mini abdominoplasty only incises the skin below the navel, and only draws abdominal muscles below the navel as well. This surgery is performed under sedation or general anaesthesia and the surgery duration is about 2-3 hours.
Notes Before Abdominoplasty
1. Abdominoplasty leaves a relatively long scar, which can be hidden when wearing underwear.
- Abdominoplasty creates an attractive-looking body line when wearing underwear or a swimsuit.
2. Inconvenience in daily activities right after surgery can be caused.
- Even if a person has undergone only a mini abdominoplasty, the person can have considerable difficulties in moving and having meals after surgery as the surgery incises part of the skin and tightens the abdominal muscles. Fortunately the difficulties are temporary.
